Compilation of Learning Adaptations for Your Class

In order to make efficient use of this file, the names of all of the learners in your class should be recorded (even those who do NOT have learning difficulties). From time to time, you should review the file. Be sure to keep this file handy and easy to consult with any time you do any form of assessment for your class.

If you feel that a specific learner may be in need of an adaptation, mark it with a question mark, and check it out, according to the policy of YOUR school. The following steps are helpful:

1. Talk to the pupil - try to find out why s/he feels s/he is having difficulties.

2. Talk to the learner's homeroom class teacher to see if the difficulties you have witnessed, have been reported by other teachers, as well.

3. Either the learner’s homeroom teacher, or you ,  yourself (again, depending on your school's policy for this) should consult with the guidance counselor.

4. If it is decided, together with the homeroom teacher and/or the guidance counselor, to recommend sending the learner for an assessment, try out the different adaptations to see what you feel is appropriate for that learner, and be sure to inform the assessor of your impressions. Remember, while the assessor has been specially trained to pinpoint learning difficulties, s/he will see your learner only for a short period of time. YOU are the person who best knows your learner and can add valuable information on the daily performance and needs of your learner.
