Suggestions for helping PHDs

Bailin - Mann Associates; Language Learning and Communication

1.     Say student’s name before addressing him

2.              Mark the student’s correct and acceptable work, not his mistakes

3.              Rather than giving discouraging low grades, give a comment when possible

4.              Recognize and give credit for the student’s oral participation in class

5.    Give shorter tests

6.    Read the test for the class, since you are testing required knowledge, not reading ability

7.    Provide extra test time / Allow for the dictating of answers

8.    Encourage student’s interests and talents (projects, ...)

9.           Make specific arrangements for those who can’t copy from the board

10.  Avoid pacing student under pressure of time and competition

11.         Be realistic in the amount of reading and/or work assigned and its level

12.  Give clear instructions and get students started.

13.        Accentuate the positive to boost student’s esteem.
